Sign O the Times mess with ur mind
Feb. 7th, 2005 03:38 pmAfter watching Inventing the Abbots, I was in a Phoenix mood and decided that instead of watching Quills again I'd watch Signs, which I bought possibly a year ago. It's the third film of Shyamalan's that I've seen, and my third favorite, but in the end I'm still glad to have watched it.
I like the directing, the cinematography, and of course Joaquin Phoenix. Mel Gibson was... kind of weird. I don't know whether it was the acting, the writing or the directing, but for much of the movie it's like he's playing somebody who's not really here; he's somewhere else, responding to something else, and occasionally the movie reaches out and shakes him.
The movie's not about aliens, or monsters. In the end, it's all about Faith and believing that everything happens for a reason. There's a speech midway through about how there are two kinds of people; those who believe that there's a Plan, and those that believe we Just Get Lucky. And in the end, I don't think that was handled well, or at least in a way that I personally found palatable.
So I probably overspent at $10 for this title, but I don't feel gypped. Especially if I can find somebody to buy it for a couple of bucks.
