A moment in time, a sliver of space
Nov. 7th, 2012 10:08 amNo more than two feet away from me, through a glass patio door, a glossy jay with jewel blue plumage and black head and crest hops about on the patio railing pecking at morsels on the railing of the deck. Directly above him, swinging wildly from the metal suet frame, a woodpecker spends more time trying to keep an eye on the jay than actually feeding on the remains of the suet. Two of the noisiest, sassiest, most aggressive birds in their weight class, utterly unconcerned by my presence.
On the opposite side of the deck, as far as possible from them, is a smoky-point cat, flattened on the wet deck, staring sullenly through the bars of the railing, ignoring the birds and certainly not the least bit interested in passing near those birds to get to the patio door and coming inside where it's warm and dry. hrmph.
