Christmas in August (Gleeful)
Aug. 9th, 2014 04:16 pmHey Tess! I just watched a Christmas Episode of Glee, which had the True Meaning of Christmas *and* a Wookie! Unfortunately there was no car crash, but the episode was a train wreck.
Extraordinary Merry Christmas: from a guy who keeps saying "I love the writing, and how the characters sometimes get two dimensions," this episode was painful to watch. It's the one with the PBS special, for those who have seen but don't remember. Actors apparently picked character traits out of a hat this episode, and even for a holiday episode, the merry atmosphere seemed... aggressive and nearly hostile, with a whole lot of Jesus making sure no other holidays sneak in. There were the usual "I don't know what this song has to do with what they said it does" or chosen just because the title seemed relevant, but this episode... for the most egregious example? Leading a chorus of homeless people in "Do They Know It's Christmas?" And then two acts of the Glee writers spoofing bad holiday specials with crappy dialogue and musical numbers that go on way too long... by writing a faux PBS holiday special with crappy dialogue and musical numbers that go on way too long. And also a talk about climate change and the End Times WTF?
In order to keep my good opinion of the show from taking a hit, I have imagined that the network execs demanded MORE CHEER and demanded the removal of nuance and depth, and so the writers said Oh yeah, I got yer cheerful right HERE. And so the entire episode is a Screw You/Be Careful What You Wish For to the brass.
