You can't take my stuff from me
May. 6th, 2005 02:49 amSpoiler free review from the Serenity sneak screening, still behind a cut.
Remember when Joss said he wanted to do a dark show? OMFG dark. And by the way, pretty much nonstop action. I was a little disappointed in the lack of character stuff, but there was constantly somebody whose ass needed kicking and so there wasn't a lot of time for it. Emotionally exhausting. I am completely wrung out. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me bounce like a school child who's had too much Coke.
And I can't wait until September. (:
Chatty and the WildPaletz are my personal heroes because they bought my ticket and then gave me a ride so I didn't have to drive in the Hell that is San Francisco traffic. People in costume (which near us meant me as Doctor Captain Hero Simon and my pals Jayne 1 and Jayne 2) were pulled out for interviewing while we were standing on queue to get in. They gave us a copy of Jane Espenson's new book and said we may appear on the DVD as bonus features. So maybe now I'm a bonus feature and all the hot chicks will want to get with me cuz I'm a sexy young doctor. There was lots of hanging out with the freaks and the comment was made that we were glad that costuming for Firefly was less... dramatically geeky than Star Wars or Harry Potter. I saw lots of people I hadn't seen in a little more than forever, including Michael S-D-W, Jason, and Megan who reminded me again why I fell in love with her. Plus we made a new friend, Ann; Jayne 1 and Jayne 2 lured her in with fresh strawberries (they got both the Kayleighs that way) and then I landed her with a saved seat. (:
The fen were pretty uniformly floored by the production, and we all salivated when Joss rung his bell in the special sneak screening pre-film announcement he made. And Michael, who had never seen the show, also enjoyed it (which was good to hear) and we talked on the way back to the car about American mythology and archetypes and he mentioned an author I'm going to have to remember and then check out.
Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk were at our screening and they were adorable and they watched the movie with us and answered questions afterward before sneaking out the back and distracting us with a pile of signed miniposters. (Mine goes to the housemate who didn't get to go and is looking to start collecting autographs.)
I will make the same comment I'm seeing all over Whedonesq. Avoid the spoilers. Avoid avoid avoid. Do not let somebody spoil the surprise. I'm personally going to wear a gag for six months, or stick a screwdriver into my brain to block the memories or something because it's going to be Very Hard.
