Think about trying to do the same thing 100 years ago. Telephones and Internet do allow some hand-holding. And there are reliable airplanes, if the situation becomes dire.

I do not debate that this job is easier now than it was at the Dawn of the Gilded Age. And airplanes are, alas, much of the trouble in this situation.
