The long awaited (by me) conclusion to Flipside week!
Shriekback is one of those bands I should have included in the earlier post requesting bands with amazing lyrics. Then they combine the lyrics of Nemesis with a down home Cajun sound, and you like it--I ga-ron-TEE.
I'm very disappointed that Frank Sinatra (It's Frank's World, we just live in it) hasn't made an appearance this week. But this version of Me and My Shadow with Sammy should prevent him from posthumously rising up and kicking all our asses.
I wasn't thrilled about the Becoming X album, but I really liked Sneaker Pimps doing Six Underground. And when Becoming RemiXed came out (I still hope to sell it on eBay some day for a millyun dollars) I grabbed it. The Umbrellas of Ladywell mix is a lot denser, it's faster, and it has a name that reminds me of a Manet painting.
You will be shocked (shocked, I say!) to discover more remixes with the hummusy taste of the middle east in my collection, but when the Stereo MCs came out with the Steve Hillage mix of Fever I couldn't resist sharing with y'all. Yes, you're welcome.
I love Matt Johnson. He reminds me that most Christians are considerate, thoughtful people and keeps me from straying to the Dark Side. The entire second disc of '45 RPM', the The's greatest hits album, is full of good mixes. I love Infected and so although I don't think it's the best remix off this disc, it's good enough to make everybody go out and buy the original. And thus my cunning plan will be complete.
Misc T was one of those evil albums that mostly contained TMBG songs I already had but contained just enough new nugget song stuff that I ended up buying it anyway. And for the cha-cha inflected Joshua Fried mix of The World's Address it was totally worth the ten bucks.
I loaned a copy of my Timbuk 3 album to a friend a while back, and recently had it returned to me. I had forgotten how cool they were, and immediately threw it into the player. Wow! Rockin'! I thought to myself. I plan to make an off-topic post with a couple of their tracks eventually. But for now, here's the new version of Future's So Bright which includes my favorite verse. Gimme two evils, I'll always take the lesser.
Remember earlier when I said anything that had to do with TransGlobal Underground I'd groove to? It's that time. Time to groove. This song reminds me of my friend Sue, and it starts out with the line "Hipsters! Tripsters! And finger poppin' daddies!" How can you go wrong with the Blue Gedida mix of Nile Delta Disco? the Aegyptian pharaohs fell from the sky and played the blues.
I was going to post the Apollo 440 remix of "Mysterious Ways" but somebody already put up a mix of that song and so instead I went to Rattle and Hum and grabbed the version of Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For from there. U2 takes the song of faith, lost and found, and adds a gospel choir. How perfect is that?
In general, I am not a big fan of the mashup. Sturgeon's Law applies, and I find most of them awkward and clunky and on top of that they're usually two (or seventeen) songs I don't care about. Those of you on my regular journal probably remember me posting this version of Come Closer earlier. Odds are good I grabbed it from Audiography. But if you want one of the smoothest Beatles/NIN non-work-safe smashups ever, and you missed both of those guest appearances, then this is for you. Yes, I love you too, baby.

Date: 2005-06-30 01:04 pm (UTC)That song had a lot of play in our house. (It's all Ellie's fault, way back when, when she gave me a mix tape with some Transglobal Underground on.) Our neighborhood finds this one really easy to mangle well, substituting "angora kittens" "wretched Velcro" or "pesky neighbors" (among others) for "Egyptian Pharohs."
I got sand in my shoes.
