I have this pet theory. If you hang around with me for long you'll probably get exposed to it.
The idea is that if the American Revolution had happened a few years later, the Constitution would be a rather different document, and the country would today be significantly changed. The Industrial Revolution, just getting underway in Europe at the time, would by the early nineteenth century give cause for concern to founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson about the power of the corporation.
I just came across a quote in my reading that I hope is properly attributed to Andrew Jackson, saying "Corporations have neither bodies to kick, nor souls to damn."
It struck a chord. That's all I'm saying.
