I read the responses from world leaders in this matter of the Dutch book containing editorial cartoons declared 'blasphemous' by the imams, and I am heartened.
The radical religious leaders demand that governments stifle their subjects in the name of religious sanctity, that laws be rewritten in democracies to accomodate and bow to religious beliefs. They insist that people who do not follow their credos bow their heads in obedience.
And for the most part, Europe and the Americas say "You don't understand." (Which is a refreshing change of pace, because far too often it seems the other way around.) They say "We believe that the freedom of our citizens is more important than holy despotism, and we will not sacrifice the will of the people (The Demos part of democracy) to the will of Hassan Nasralah." Or Pat Robertson. Right?

You know, all the news about the Danish cartoon just really makes me want to see it, which seems like it might be impossible.

Also, hi.

Wow. Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, after viewing this, I went out and killed like ten Jews in a jihadical rage.

What a pity! You should have gone after right-wing white people, seeing as that's the ethnic group responsible for the pictures. Danes, to be specific, but I know how hard it can be to pick them out from other people of Nordic descent. Better luck next time?

Well I was taking a page from Iran, who apparently thought it was appropriate to respond to the Danish comic strips by making a contest in some newspaper to draw cartoons about The Holocaust.

I think the fundamentalists are just finding it hard to open their minds wide enough to hate someone other than Jews.

It's because they know that the best way to make the comparison more obvious to Westerners is to pick the Holocaust. That's a sufficient sacred topic for us in general that our most likely reaction is horror and/or anger, and that just maybe in the moment, we will understand how they feel. But the collective "we" won't, so the exercise is relatively pointless.
