I was trying to remember what the trade was that made the Republicans pull federal troops out of the south, more or less ending Reconstruction. So I googled 'federal troops compromise reconstruction' and it pointed me at the Wikipedia article on the Compromise of 1877. And now I can use my brain for other things.
