Is there somebody on my flist who deals with podcasts? (I suspect Clay does, actually...) I'm trying to find out if there's a way I can listen to stuff like the VaudCast or This American Life/Wait Wait Don't Tell Me/Car Talk from NPR on my mp3 player, and my head is full of snot and I'm feeling really stupid and worse to worst on my day off I'll plug the Rio into the desktop and tinker and see if I can make the IntarWeb serve my bidding.
I'm a fucking child of the digital age. This should not be such a hassle.

Oh my god, there are other human beings who have Rio players? o_O I thought I was the only person in the known world who knows what those things are!

...That said, I have no idea how to answer your question. I usually just play them directly off the NPR.org page. Partially because my Rio is ancient and a) only allows 41 songs, and b) won't let me put new stuff on unless the battery is brand-frigging-new, so I have to choose stuff that I can listen to over and over again unless I want to play battery-shuffle every day.

Yeah, I've got a Rio. (: I looked at the $80 price tag and held it up next to the $300 on an iPod and said 'I guess Apple just priced themselves out of my market *again*.' Plus I was leery of the whole m4a thing and iTunes and iLife and seamless despotism taking over my computer.

Agreed. I've been wanting to replace my Rio because it's ancient, and our school offers a great deal on iPods, but... yeah. Spendy suckers, and I hate iTunes. So I and my dinosaur of an mp3 player are pretty happy, still. ;)

You can use FireAnt or the Democracy player to download audio podcasts on a regular schedual, then you just have to transfer them to your RIO the same way you transfer music over.

Video will work too, if the RIO plays video. :)

FireAnt.tv (I think)
And there's a link to the Democracy player thru VideoBomb.com

Oooo. (Now to find the time to actually listen to the stuff I plan to download. Because as it is I'm only using 29 hours in the day to do the stuff that needs doing, and so that leaves me with an extra 7 that are just sitting there doing nothing. And you still need your CD. I should just give it to Tersa to give to Ezzie to give to you.)

If you already have iTunes on your desktop, and you have all the podcasts automatically loading there, you might be able to just copy/paste them to the Rio interface, or even drag/drop.

I was pleasantly surprised at iTunes when I was moving stuff to my Treo, I was able to make a playlist based on some criteria, then select all/copy in the iTunes window, and then paste into the file window (representing the memory card). I know the rio has a specialized interface too so you may have to drag/drop or copy/paste to a temporary location and then drag into rio.

I'm pretty sure this would work for audio, but I'm guessing that video would confuse Rio unless it is already video-OK. Good luck.

Nah, the Rio's audio only, and I have good interface between musicmatch and the Rio so I imagine I wouldn't have any troubles if I downloaded iTunes.

iTunes--the main advantage is that the iTunes "store" for podcasts makes them easier to find. iTunes does have an incredibly obnoxious habit of not auto-updating podcasts that it "thinks" you haven't listened to in a while, though.

I have a shuffle, so I always have to drag and drop the files anyway. Probably not too different for your Rio.
