The year BloodSugarSexMagik was released, Mtv invited the Red Hot Chili Peppers to be on their award show. And they were quite keen on having the boys perform "Under the Bridge". Anthony reportedly said "Um, yeah, see, we're kind of sick of that song. Can we do Give It Away instead?" But Mtv was adamant. The kids, these days, they love the Under the Bridge and so by gum that's what they'll get. And, much like Jim Morrison on the Ed Sullivan, the Peppers said okay and went on stage to perform and after the first verse of UtB they suddenly changed gears and kicked into GiA. By the end of the song they had shed their clothes and were wearing little helmets with flames shooting out of them and Giving Up the Funk, as the kids these days say.
And they were never invited back to an Mtv awards show again.
It seems as though Weird Al was inspired by this performance and used the format for his parody "Bedrock Anthem". (Which reminds me--it's '80s week and nobody's posted Weird Al yet. I should fix that.) And that is why I call this version the Bedrock Cut.
