Meme of the moment: (Gifted upon me by Rhiannonstone.) Name five songs that begin with a letter assigned by someone else (and, I suppose, say something about each of them). I have been assigned the letter 'F'. But you know me-- I couldn't let it go at that.

Foremost Fabulous Five F's
The '80s was pretty much the time I started paying attention to music. It's still where most of my musical tastes lie.

Fuck tha Police -- NWA
When she gave me my letter, this was the first song I thought of. Once upon a time, there was rap that wasn't about bitches *or* hos, diamond teeth or lear jets. This is a song that I listen to in the car at high volume, and sometimes get funny looks.
Friend or Foe -- Adam Ant
Adam Ant is where I get my fashion sense from.
For It All -- Cats Laughing
This is the ultimate teenage song, with big '80s guitars and performed by fantasy authors. How could I resist?
Fly on the Windscreen -- Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode was the gateway drug to Goth music for me; from Schmode to the Cure to Bauhaus and then it was all over.
Future's So Bright -- Timbuk3
This is the acoustic version, with the extra verse. I wasn't mad about this song until I realized he was being sarcastic.

Further Five F's: Folky Females
Few things sexier than a woman with a guitar.
February -- Dar Williams
Mortal City is very emotionally tied in my head to moving to California. Ellen gave Cari and I the CD to listen to on the road from Monterey to Mountain View, and it was my introduction to Dar. I don't listen to this album in public any more because it makes me cry. Family is also on this album.
Fear -- Sarah McLachlan
Sarah says things in her songs that I would think if I could assemble my thoughts to imagine saying them.
Four Leaf Clover -- Abra Moore
I occasionally flirt dangerously close to country/western music. I don't repent, I don't apologize, and I have no shame. This song steals my heart.
Falling -- Allison Moyet
I like Yazoo, I like Allison with Vincent Clarke writing for her. But on her own she still finds fascinating ways to play with music and words.
Fade into You -- Mazzy Star
This was the first track I chose for 'Stay Awake', the playlist for going to sleep by. It's musical laudanum; she sings like she's drenched in thick sweet liquor, but it has a very bitter aftertaste.

Four Foine Fenian F's
Aye and they're all Irish. More or less all.
Fairytale of New York -- the Pogues
The Pogues are Real Irish Music. They don't sit around and talk about their feelings. They get drunk and beat the crap out of each other.
Folsom Prison Blues -- Johnny Cash
Remember that flirting with country/western music? This is classic. Hello, I'm Johnny Cash. I shot a man in Reno. Everything a c/w song should be. He's honorary Real Irish Music.
Foggy Dew -- Young Dubliners
Wow. I hadn't realized how much that Irish theme was going to carry. This used to be the Final Five, now I'm going back and editing it.
Famine -- Sinead O'Connor
I don't know how historically correct she is, but she's never been interested in what I thought. This song is pretty much about Black '47 and how it got to be so black.

Final Five F's
Fever -- the Bobs
This song is on the queue for the Shakespeare mix. I don't have the Peggy Lee version, but I think I like this one better. The Bobs have a lot of fun with covers, and take this one right over the top.
Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In -- Hair OCR
Also on the Shakespearean queue. I first saw this show in college and was completely blown away by the crucifixion finale. They forgot to do the nude scene that night, and at the opening of the next act, Claude's actor came out and apologized to those who had only come to see it.
Fascination Street -- the Cure
It's dark and it's layer on layer on layer of sound and there's an undercurrent of desperation mixed liberally with ennui. This is the template that all Cure songs should be built on.
Fell in Love with a Girl -- White Stripes
If it weren't for punk kittens I probably wouldn't be crazy about this band. This is the acoustic version, which I love to pieces.
Fire -- RHCP
The best part of this cover is when Anthony says "Move over, Jimi, and let Huckleberry take over." It's a perfectly capable cover without that, and gets plenty funky (this was before Under the Bridge when RHCP started making sucky ballad singles) but that's the moment when it goes to eleven.

I still had to leave out a bunch of stuff I wanted in here, but it's two-thirty and I've nearly forgotten all the crap that made me so pissy and despondent after work so it's probably safe to go to bed now.

In unrelated news, I have what looks suspiciously like a trail of cat claw marks across my thigh, but I do not recall them being made. And I think I would.
