So this is how it is. Earth that was got used up. Over here in Yank Land, there was a television show called Firefly. It died cruelly aborning, and in time rose from its ashes and was re-created as a film called Serenity. Before its 'official' release, there were sneak preview showings to try and incite interest. Many people attended these showings, including some people with cunning knitted caps and some with pretty parasols and some with cameras lights and microphones. Those with cameras lights and microphones created a visual record of the passionate interest that a small segment of the population held for the television show and the new film. Your humble storyteller was a part of that record. And then there was a DVD release, which yhs was under the impression contained said visual record. He was disabused of that impression last night, upon viewing said DVD.
So perhaps you can help me. I hear that phrase (Xie xie, she she, however it gets transliterated) in HK films a lot. What exactly does it mean? I get the impression it's something of a catch-all; thank you, it's fine... kind of like 'aloha'.
Means, as far as I can tell, "thank you," in Mandarin, pretty simply.
Go talk to my rl friend oneshallstand - tell him I sent you. He's realised his dream and is living in Shenyang with his new bride, which is quite a long step from Lancashire/ Cardiff/ Reading, where he used to reside.
He's also a MASSIVE Firefly/ Serenity fan and is rapidly learning Mandarin (he's Teaching English as a Foreign Language over there).
