And it's something quite peculiar
Oct. 9th, 2006 08:00 amSo, due to another round of poor planning, this is me trying to stay awake for another two hours so I can drive to the airport and not sleep through my flight. However, Monday's a federal holiday so I'm hoping that flight loads are low.
Last day in Ashland--I bade goodbye to my hosts as (if they were sane) I wouldn't see them before I left for the airport.
The Curious Case of Doctor Jeckyll and Mister Hyde. I must say I was disappointed. The accents, as the first thing that hit me, were too often inconstant and poorly done. Not all around, but often enough to make me twitch. The new script was a disappointment, muddled and meandering. At intermission I thought "I could be chocolate shopping, or reading my book." And so I was. I didn't return for the second half of the play, because I just wasn't enjoying it.
And since I had five hours in between shows, I stopped by the cinema and found a four-twenty showing of The Illusionist. And yes, after the third or fourth time the young Eisenheimer tells his love that he's going to make them disappear, the question on your mind is no longer "What do you suppose is going to happen?" But I enjoyed the film a great deal, and I loved the 'retro' look; the title font, the 'flickering', the wipes and fades, all the little touches.
Running with Scissors trailer: I laughed. I like the look of this film. Is it, however, just too 'quirky'?
Last King of Scotland trailer: Forrest Whittaker appearing on screen as Idi Amin made me say 'Wow'. I don't know if I'm going to like this or not, but it has promise.
The United States Versus John Lennon trailer: When I heard the line about how the most treasonous thing about the Viet Nam War was the corruption and assault on the Constitution, I thought I should ask Ellie when she wanted to see this.
For dinner I stopped off at the Firefly Cafe, a place I had walked by several times while it was closed but never actually visited. It's described as 'Asian fusion' which means (I discovered too late) that they put cilantro on everything. But the waitstaff was good, and very aware of impending curtain times, and aside from the demon weed the food was very nice. Lots of plantains, potatoes and yams, with rice bowls and brothy soups.
Two Gentlemen of Verona. It's an 'early comedy' and most of what I read about it was "This is where Shakespeare first does [dramatic element], which he refines and does much better in [later play]." And yes, Proteus is an utter shit and doesn't deserve to be allowed back into polite society, but I still laughed a lot and enjoyed myself immensely. This is the play with a dog, and there were also Mennonites, Preppies and punk rockers. Valentine in his black leather coat pretty much made it worthwhile right there. I want one. Lots of music, singing and dancing. I'm not certain how much of it was 'closing night woo hoo' and how much of it was initially scripted, but there was a lot of goofing around, especially with the 'low characters' like the servants and the outlaws. Not too much, yay, but it was noticable.
And after the performance we had a ceremony to close the Elizabethan for the year.
I would like to see the shows with somebody next year. So I am encouraging people to take a look at next year's schedule (I can pre-order in late November) and see if there's any room in their schedule around the first week of October.
I should go back and remove a few 'very's but I'm not exactly motivated.
Hoping to be in Florida in about twelve hours. Fingers crossed.
