Apparently I need a fucking iTutorial because I can't figure out how to use the damned store. I hate the interface--after Rhapsody, it feels clunky and awkward--and I'm certain that even if I can't play the whole thing, there must be some way to play a snippet of the song before I purchase it. Of course, I can't sleep and I'm already in an amazingly surly mood from work and stress and sick and that plays into my already poor opinion of anything to do with the iLife Mafia. I'm not pleased with the new format of iTunes, either, and now there's a window in the bottom of my playlist (taking up real estate that I'd like to use for DISPLAYING MY MUSIC KTHX) inviting me to turn on the MiniStore so I can spend even more time wandering around the iTunes Music Store and I can't find any way to make this advertisment go away.
And I don't think they've got what I need to finish this project which I'm beginning to hate as well.
I do not have as much hate for the new LJ posting format that others seem to, but perhaps it's because I'm distracted and busy hating other things.

So I never used Rhapsody and am much more familiar with itunes.

Generally if I want to play something on itunes before purchasing it, I double left-click on the song. and it begins playing for me. After it plays the space bar works to pause it.

As for getting rid of the ministore window check under the View command. (in between controls and store). You can click on 'Hide Mini Store' and it goes away.

These are both helpful suggestions for what I think are unintuitive steps, and I am greatly appreciative.
It looks like I might be able to find many of the things I'm looking for, but neither source has Matthew Wilder. I blame Tahnan for reminding me I needed it.

You are very welcome. Any other questions?

At this point, everything appears to be more or less comprehensible. Just irritating. Is there any way around the "buy the song, download the song, burn the song to a CD and then rip it back to the hard drive" process to avoid security restrictions?

Not really. You can authorize other computers and devices up to seven I believe. Other than that... burn it to cds and rerip it.

It is annoying, but it doesn't interfere with making mix cds.

I'm told that there are some third-party utilities that help in this matter.

No, there is no other way around it. I use my CD-RWs for exactly this reason, at least that way I'm not using up media.
