Those cats were fast as lightning
Dec. 25th, 2006 12:02 amToday was my day off. The cats let me sleep until ten, and I puttered until Anne came over to visit with home made Christmas chocolates and more West Wing. Also, a particle board log so the apartment was less cold. Then it was off to Rancho Huevo for goose dinner and lots of lovely socializing. (And a Ganesh keychain! Prezzies! Please, Mister Simpson, stop feeding peanuts to my god.) To top the evening off, Ebonlock picked me up and we went to see Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat in Curse of the Golden Flower.
This movie is Lion in Winter liberally blended with Titus Andronicus garnished with Wuxia and decorated by Mark Rothko and Elton John. The family is seriously screwed up, the costumes are amazing, the colors are saturated, and there are ninjas. Chow Yun Fat is truly mighty--he has a fight where he never even bothers to stand up, and the moment when Daddy takes off his belt is cinematic genius. The plot is pure Chinese soap opera, with court intrigue, incest, affairs, betrayal, upthrust bosoms and ninjas. There's a moment in the epic courtyard battle which I felt was too far over the top ("I have an army of ten thousand!" "Oh yeah? Well... I have an army of five hundred thousand! Plus, um, an eighty foot high shield wall! Oh, and plus the shields have little pop out panels with spearmen inside! Oh! And there are spikes along the bottom!"), and if Chow was going to be that prepared for everything, I think he should have been less surprized when his favorite son was suddenly assassinated. But those are minor quibbles in an otherwise highly enjoyable film which has ninjas.
Coyote Reviews gives it four wags out of five.
I just gave a dollar to AIDS research by visiting the Bristol-Myers Squibb page to which I was directed by the charming and thoughtful Windrose. I encourage folks to visit the site, click on the candle, and spread some light.
EDIT: Looks like they have over 1.6 million clicks on that website already, and they said they were capping out at $100.000, so visiting the website will let them know you care but won't actually donate another dollar.
