So can somebody who did Model U.N. in secondary school give me a basic idea of how it works? Like a wire frame that I can then hang things on?
In other news, Slobodan Milosevic's dead. Undead undead undead.

MUN? Seriously? I got suckered into by a pushy history teacher freshman year, and basically it's glorified debate team. Your school is a assigned a country (or two, if your team's that big) and then pairs of people are each assigned to different comittees or councils (obviously, only really good experience people get stuff like security council). You research a ton of crap, write position papers, and if you're me, wonder why an extracurricular has more work than all your classes combined. If you're not me, you take it way too seriously, and keep your partner up all night at the conference so you both total about 6 hours of sleep the whole weekend.

There's also college-level stuff, and the way the college teams raise money for their conferences is usually by hosting the high school ones.

Unless that question wasn't serious and I missed that part.

(Also, there are actual vampire hunters? For real?)

I am guessing that the two mostly likely places to find vampire hunters are Eastern Europe and California.

And I'm totally serious about the MUN question. I remember it going on in school and was thinking of using it as a backdrop for some fiction. I recall tales of going to a hotel for the big meeting and there being a lot of teenagers 'geek partying'.

Heh. There probably were some parties, but the teachers who coached our team were super-strict, so very little happenened. There was this huge fiasco one time where two kids on the team were dating and told that either only one of them went or neither of them. (They were both pretty trustworthy, too, so it was pretty ridiculous, and parents got involved and somehow it ended up on the front page of the school paper.)

The business attire mentioned... that part I liked. Pantsuits rock.

In Model U.N. you're assigned (or pick, I guess, we were assigned) a country. You research said countries policies and opinions on the topic of the conference segment you're assigned, and then you go and debate. We had three person teams. There is a "ruling body" you argue before. There is a procedure to the arguments, just like a "real" UN hearing.

And everyone's required to dress in business attire. It was actually a lot of fun, but a TON of work.

I ended up as a reporter at ours. It was fun. We went around and took pictures and interviewed people.

I was the ambassador to Czechoslovakia my senior year. I agree that it was a ton of work, but it was great fun. And there was lots of geek partying to be done. The sessions were held at a local college and we slept in the dorms, which obviously means making out with college guys. Also, I remember the sergeant at arms being ordered to escort me from the chamber when I got particularly worked up about something. So I went and played Centipede in the student union. Seriously, some of the best times I had in high school.
