I was also advised that I should give you the opportunity to jump on the meme train if you so wished.
This is one of my favorite cross-genre icons. The text is from the Harry Potter books, the key to opening the Marauders' Map that the three animagi wrote while students. The picture is Ian and Barbara, Doctor Who's first companions (not counting his 'granddaughter'), who were both school teachers and thus confirmed troublemakers.
I use this icon with posts where I am up to no good.
Another cross-genre icon, and another Doctor Who icon. The text is from another British scifi series, "Red Dwarf", and was the catch phrase for Arnold "Ace" Rimmer, the alternate-universe ubercompetent, terribly sexy and far too cool alter ego of Arnold "Smeghead" Rimmer. Captain Jack Harkness, the ninth Doctor's terribly sexy, still pretty competent and definitely far too cool companion, is the picture. The personalities overlapped enough to make this crossover amusing to me.
I use it with posts where the mood is cheeky, or terribly sexy or too cool for the Stylin' icon.
"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" was the play that introduced me to the genius of Tom Stoppard. For once, the caption and image match; this is the scene in which Rosencrantz (or is it Guildenstern) pretends to be Hamlet, and Guildenstern (or is it Rosencrantz) pretends to be either Guildenstern or Rosencrantz and questions the mock-Hamlet in order to gather, So much as from occasion they may glean, Whether aught, to us unknown, afflicts him thus. Me, I tend to use it with posts where I want a response from my multitude of readers, like with IFAMAQD.

MC Esher was a Dutch artist who did a lot of work with woodcuts, pencil sketches and lithographs. The drawings of his I find most intriguing deal with recursion, tesselation and perspective play. Most of his more prominent images in these areas are viewable on the magic that is Wikipedia and if you have not seen his work before I highly encourage you to make with the clicky.

In one sentance. UF is about 'fairy stories told today'. Elves in Central Park, Goblins in the subways, evil stepmothers in the suburbs, all that stuff. My introduction to the genre was Emma Bull's War for the Oaks, which I tend to hold up as the Socratic Ideal for any other works. Will Shetterly, Midori Snyder, Charles deLint, Jim Butcher, Terri Windling, Ellen Datlow--these last two particularly, who tend to edit anthologies like "The Green Man" or "Year's Best Fantasy and Horror".
making mix discs
Given that she has received more than one of my mix discs, I can't imagine she needs more technical information. I enjoy making mix discs; I like the creative aspects of composing without having to actually have any musical training, of putting together liner art (although my Photoshop skills are weak, old man), of creating theme and flow. I like giving them to people who enjoy them. Which is why I generally don't give them to anybody unless they ask--so that I at least suspect they'll like them.

I lived in my truck in college and got kicked out of my parents' house when I graduated from college. I did not belong in Kansas and wandered around the country a bit, but found home with Drew. Cheesy, I know.

Being like Stacey someday: adapted from the original phrase, I'm gonna be Stacey when I grow up! Stacey was one of my bosses in college. She graduated from SC then enrolled in the library science program at ESU. I graduated from SC then enrolled in the library science program at ESU. She has my dream job but it's in Kansas so she is welcome to it.
Harness your cheese: So I used to work on ropes courses pretty much year round. One of my bosses, Sarah, told me a story about another ropes course facilitator who told the participants to "Harness your chi!" when they were on the course (30' in the air). After hearing this several times, one of the participants looked at him and said "Harness your cheese?" I actually made a picture of a wedge of cheese in a harness but I don't think I saveed it.
The Berkshire Mountains: while wandering around the country, I spent a summer in western Mass, near Pittsfield. When I first saw the mountains, I said "Mountains! Aww, they're cute!" as I am accustomed to the Rockies. But it was a great summer and I loved the town. Good vibe in New England.
