I have these investigatin' feet, see...
It looks like I can take the Stevens Creek Trail from Evelyn to Middlefield and make my commute far more pleasant. I'm not prepared to test it tonight, because I'm expected to run an errand after work and testing things often means that it takes a few extra hours to get home. But next week, Tuesday perhaps.

Stevens Creek Trail is teh Awesome. I highly highly recommend taking it if it will get you where you want to go.

It will sort of get me where I want to go, or at least it'll keep me off of Moffett and a part of Evelyn. Depending on how close to Middlefield I can get off of it, I'll probably find it to be a huge improvement.
(Even if the slope up Middlefield and over Central kill me.)

The trail goes under Middlefield where Middlefield goes over Stevens Creek, and IIRC there's access to Middlefield at that apartment complex parking lot that's on your left as you're driving south on Middlefield and have just crossed over 85. Alternately, there's an official exit/entrance to the trail through Whisman School Park, where the Stevens Creek Trail connects to the rails-to-trails hike/bike trail that runs up and down the peninsula (dunno if it has a name), and you can use that to get through the park, then take Easy Street over to Middlefield.

map, where that trail intersection is at the top of the frame (you can see the little funnel-shaped bridge that goes over Stevens Creek in the park), and the apartment complex is at the bottom of the frame.

Excellent. I'd figured there would be some sort of interchange, but the uncertainty was one of the reasons I was postponing the investigation until I didn't need to be home right after work. (:

Where's your employer? I might have other route suggestions, since I biked a bit in that MEW area.

My employer is at East Evelyn and Bernardo, at the very south edge of Mountain View. Right now, I'm going up Sierra Vista to Middlefield, Middlefield to Moffett, Moffett/Castro to Evelyn.

To avoid even more major streets, you might consider taking Sierra Vista all the way down to Montecito, stay on Montecito as it turns into Stierlin, then take a left on Central Ave (not Central Expwy), and there's a really nice and easy access onto the Stevens Creek Trail at the end of Central Ave.

That route turned out to be very satisfying. Yay for clever friends.
