I am looking at, between Jakey and the Nation magazine, about 75 free downloads from eMusic.
I'm sort of at a loss as to what all to get, though. And so I come to you, the grand LJ collective hivemind, for suggestions. I'm thinking Matt Nathanson, maybe Gogol Bordello. eMusic is apparently a little more indie, a little more small label than places like Rhapsody or iTunes.
Please, make your suggestions. The more specific the better.

Stinkin' LJ wouldn't let me type that much. Anyway, I forget what else I typed, but definitely go with Gogol Bordello. Also, Jarvis Cocker's solo album is (I think) on an independent is one of the best things I've bought this year (I think it actually cam out last year, but didn't get released here until this year? I should not be posting so late, it makes me incoherent.)

I had other ideas but now I forget. Hmm, there's a local Chicago band called Of the Opera that I think put out an album recently. They're good live, at any rate. They're definitely on an indie.

I am shutting up and going to sleep, and maybe tomorrow I will make a coherent comment.

I've been really into Regina Spektor lately, and she's kind of on the indie borderline. She probably qualifies as a specific taste, though, so you might be better served listening to a sample or two before downloading. The best way I'd describe her is Tori Amos with Russian Jewish influences - she does a lot of the counterpoint and atonal stuff that Amos does, but her heritage shows through in several pieces, notably "Aprés Moi". She's also a classically trained pianist, so lots of the time she has beautiful flowing piano work to offset the more staccato sections. The albums I've been listening to are Soviet Kitsch and Begin to Hope; recommended tracks: "Ode to Divorce", "Chemo Limo", "Your Honor", "Hotel Song", "Aprés Moi", "20 Years of Snow", "That Time".

Okay, done rambling. Let me know your thoughts.

Gogol Bordello has just about worn the bits off my mp3 player's storage since I discovered them.

I have no idea who any of those other ones mentioned are, on account of cane and lawn.

You can find my recs list on emusic by looking up user JakeJr, I'm pretty sure. Or just go to the page for the A Slipping-Down Life album and on the "is part of these lists" sidebar pick "And I Approved This Message," which is my recs list.
