I wondered today as I watched cars wrapped in American flags zooming down the street; how many of these drivers, their vision obscured by Old Glory, had participated in a ritual for which numberless Americans had died for them to have access to. How many of these newly-created patriots had voted last week? Odds are, about 36% of them, if my web searching abilities do not fail me. (Which is higher than I expected. For some reason, I have an average figure of about 25% on non-presidential elections stuck in my head.)
Oh well. I'll just fall back on 'if you don't vote you're not allowed to complain'.

It amused me that one of the biggest objects of petty vandalism following 9/11 was the stealing of American flags...as one journalist put it, though, "what's a little kleptomania between patriots?" =)

in my family, we call the "patriotic" stuff Garlic, meant to ward off the evil eye of anti-americanism. Bah, humbug. I agree with you: when did these people vote? Why aren't they thinking about our nation and the government crically instead of hiding themselves behind the flag, wrapping it around their head until they are blind, deaf, and dumb. Middle America. May some diety help them, cuz they're not going to help themselves to anything but another burger.

These folks aren't serious and never were and never will be. They are just following the fad du jour of patriotism spurred by a media blitz. Next year they won't even remember why they did it.
