Also? I'm thinking of getting some ribbons and braiding them into replacements for my bootlaces. Is this at all feasible? Maybe I should braid them around an actual shoelace but I'm worried they'll be too fat and won't fit through the grommet.

Depends on what the ribbons are made of and also how grabby the lacing holes on your boots might be.

Hrm. What sorts of things should I be looking for in ribbons? Silk? A certain thickness?

Weave. Satin is too slippery, won't hold a knot easily and will snag and shred if you look at it wrong. Grosgrain is probably better.

But if your lacing eyelets aren't fairly smooth, ribbons will shred up pretty fast no matter what you do.
