Back update:
Going to class seemed good--my back didn't hurt at all during or after.
In fact, everything was fine until about an hour after I got up this morning, and it returned with a vengeance. More hot water, or at least as hot as I could get it, and more Advil. When I get home, then more mentholated topical cream.

Slept for crap. I think I woke up over a dozen times that I can remember over the course of the night.

Ice, ice baby.

Seriously, if you're talking recurring severe muscle pain, use ice only for the first 12 to 24 hours, THEN add in the heat. Giving it heat too early encourages the inflamed and swollen muscles to remain inflamed and swollen, and they don't quite heal properly.

Stretching as part of your bedtime routine is also extremely helpful, once the initial flare-up dies down. I can always tell the difference in my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep if I've stretched. A week of not following my normal routine and then cramming myself into an airplane seat has definitely taken its toll on my back.

See, that's the thing. The sleeping for crap had nothing to do with my back--my back was fine all night. (And I'm glad you finally got home!)
But yeah, it's been about two weeks now and even though it's a mild nagging thing, I'd like it to go away.
