cyrano: (Still Flying)

Just updatey comments stuff.
I'm going to try and see Forbidden Kingdom tomorrow afternoon. Maybe early, to avoid the annoying crowds, probably at Homeyplex because I have free passes from ELO_SF. Anybody care to join me?
Also, Rock Band has infected the house. The housemate and I are assembling tracks from the playlist (I have 36 so far) that can then be listened to, mostly for help learning the vocal tracks. Surprisingly, my biggest hole is in the new music you kids these days listen to. But I have iTunes money, and some of these songs are actually kind of cool.

Word to the wise - there's a torrent floating around on The Pirate Bay that's a compilation of all the original songs from Rock Band. Cheaper and faster than buying them individually. ;)

....I've avoided learning how to use bittorrent because then there's less temptation to 'steal' music. I think the labels are jacking us for every penny they can squeeze out of us, but at the same time I think the artist should get remuneration for hir work. So generally I try to eventually pay for music, even if I start off with a 'loaner copy' to find out if I want to own it.

Azureus would be a good place to start. =)

Brian actually prefers to either buy used, or pirate the music and then find the artist's website and send them a Paypal donation. He really hates the music companies and their tactics. But he often uses iTunes because it's convenient, and Steve Jobs has been issuing the smackdown on the record companies in significant ways. =D

Oh yeah, for some reason buying used CDs doesn't make me feel at all guilty. Do a lot of artists have donation links on their webpages? I was pleased when JoCo did it, but it seemed an unusual case rather than a default.

Some do, some don't. Oftentimes you can find an email link and ask if they have a Paypal account - some people seem to think having a "tip jar" up on your website is tacky, but would be happy to accept a contribution that someone offered. (I've never understood that thinking, myself - websites ain't free to maintain, and you're not being personally asked for a contribution where you could potentially lose face by saying "no". To incorporate themes from our other conversation. ;)

I will have to look into this option. I imagine it's much easier to manage for the smaller-industry musicians, like Lee Press-On (but I can buy his albums directly from him more or less anyway) than somebody like The Police. Of course, Lee Press-On doesn't have songs on Rock Band yet. I'm waiting for the brass-section attachment for the PSIII.
