Question for the Tolkein freaks out there. When Gandalf talks about driving the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur down in the south, that's Sauron (or at least a sort of proto-Sauron) right? Even Gandalf is scared of this guy, so he must be pretty hot shit.

Yeah, the Necromancer is Sauron. If you read closely, you'll discover that he was hiding in Mirkwood during the events of _The Hobbit_, and shortly after that novel Gandalf and Beorn and the Wood Elves drove him and his minions out. Which means that Bilbo was using the ring dangerously close to Sauron, and was awfully lucky he didn't stumble the wrong way. (Or, well, if we pretend it's not fiction, anyway.)

It's quite interesting that, in all of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books, he never shows up on-camera. I think that's part of why he persists as a scary villain. We hear his voice occasionally, and certainly see a lot of his minions, but he never wanders out and says hi.

Which also was challenging for the movie makers. Think about it, your big time villan is a red eye with a voice. Creepy on paper, but it would make for a terrible visual!
