The world of John Steinbeck, I'm thinking "Cannery Row," back when Monterey and the surrounding area was still a bunch of sleepy fishing villages.

Times weren't perfect, but then, they rarely are.

I'm thinking the Vorkosiverse. Probably Beta Colony. A lot of freedom of motion, a lot of freedom in body form, lots of opportunities to learn and do neat stuff, pretty decent social balance.

If I had to pick somewhere other than here (and I'm not altogether sure I *would*), I'd have to go with Stargate: Atlantis. Which is roughly the same as the SG1-verse, but with a lot less Richard Dean Anderson....
