Mamma Mia, mini review. Also, guitars.

Today we saw the film of 'Mamma Mia', conclusively proving that I am not a woman trapped in a man's body. However, the funny parts balanced the annoying parts.
(I liked the Greek Chorus line and the Fernando's bit.)

Also, if somebody has a guitar they'd like to rent me for cheap, let me know. Depending on the next few days, I want to start taking lessons. (I don't know enough to know whether I'm looking at acoustic or electric because I don't know enough about the differences.)

well, with an acoustic, you don't *need* any other equipment. WIth an electric, you will need the guitar and some sort of amp - so that's an added expense right there. I would recommend checking out lessons, and seeing about a rent to own program - you won't necessarily be tied to one guitar that way.

I've got an electric guitar + amp that you can borrow. I've also got a cheap classical guitar that you can have if you want it (someone who studied classical guitar picked it out for me as a suitable starter instrument).

Ezzy' 'rent to own' comment reminded me of seeing signboards on Old Middlefield just before the 101-S on-ramp heralding a '75% off Guitar Sale' at a little music shop there in the hidden strip mall.

The music shop in the Hidden Strip Mall is Norm's Music. They're okay, but not cheap. So 75% may not be as good as you'd think.

I heart my acoustic, but I am probably going to acquire an electric at some point, too, just because that I can play at all hours without bothering my neighbors. (Headphones are good.) It's hard sometimes to fit practice time into my schedule at an hour when it's reasonable to play for noise reasons. Ultimately, I'd say it depends a bit on what kind of music you want to learn and where, if at all, you want to play for other people. Poke me later and I'll try to dig up some of the websites I visited when I was doing research for my first guitar purchase.

How hard is it to hook an acoustic guitar up to an amp? I'm guessing you slap a contact mike on the sound chamber or something.

I've never done it with mine. I do know that they can be purchased with a jack built in, but that costs more.

I don't remember if these are the things I read back when. I was pretty settled on an acoustic because I'm more interested in folk/Americana-type music, so my research was more focused on finding a reasonably priced starter acoustic that would sound good enough to keep my musically trained ear happy, with the intention of upgrading later if I stuck with it. I wound up spending about $100 thanks to some careful shopping. And what they say about electric being easy when you've learned on an acoustic is true. Here are a couple of links, though. Rent a guitar? I wouldn't think a beginner's instrument would be that expensive, used, that it would make more sense to rent. Have you looked on eBay?
