Does anybody know, off hand, when this new tobacco law Obama just signed goes into effect? I knew I should have bought a pack or two for just in case.

Edited to add this bit from Wikipedia because I laugh out louded.
Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks (clove cigarettes) in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the medicinal eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. It cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died of lung cancer before he could mass market it.

I'm not sure, but I'm planning on stopping on the way home tonight to pick up a couple of packs of cloves, since those are about to be banned. (Because adults apparently can't prefer sweet, flavored cigs, which must exist only to draw children in.)

Yeah, I forgot to mention that was why I was going shopping--the whole 'no more for you think of the children' thing.

You know what? Fuck the damned children (in a metaphorical sense, of course.)

I ran pretty wild, and managed to not kill myself or anyone else. Why can't the current crop do the same?

I don't want to live in a sanitized, dumbed-down, padded bubble just because someone, somewhere got their panties in a twist because OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN - they might be doing the same things I did at that age! HORRORS!
With all attendant pearl-clutching.

Fuck that noise.
I used to want my own island. Now, I want my own planet.

But it's for our own good! The government says so!

ARGH.

Ok, nevermind. Sorry.

LOL @ "laugh out louded". :)

What's really kind of weird to me is that menthol cigarettes don't count as one of those flavored cigarettes that must be banned.

Philip Morris Corporation supported this legislation, so I doubt much will change.

Do you really think so? I mean, it's Obama administration legislation, so that defaults to 'nothing actually changes' but....

Phillip Morris got what they wanted out of this, which was that the FDA would ban all flavorings *except* Menthol, which is going to be considered at a later time.

Phillip Morris is the #1 producer of Menthol cigs in the US.

Does the math make sense?

Hah! I figured there was something like that going on, otherwise the whole 'we still like menthol' thing made no sense.

From an American political standpoint, almost anything makes sense.
