When I was little and wanted to go to the fireworks, I had to bike down to the riverside hours before hand to bunker down and try to make it as comfortable as possible. If I'd done well, I had shade. If not, I had sunscreen. As the sun started to go down, I could retrieve my coat and try to avoid the folks hauling their beer coolers through the collected gathering, convinced that there was an empty space up close that somebody had just forgotten to sit in.
If I'd remembered to bring a flashlight, I could keep reading. And then there were fireworks. And that was nice too.

Tonight, in California, we ate pizza, watched television and surfed the net in our cozy living room until we started hearing deep prolonged booming sounds. Then we walked all the way out onto our patio, waved at our lovely neighbours, and watched the fireworks through the trees. And that was nice. In fact, I think I like the new version better. (Although RoseNeko's seems to be the best of all.)

Today I went to the station and met SadieO, who is to be my mentor. She showed me the library and walked me through some of the procedures and paperwork for the DJs. Despite my getting lost (it *is* Stanford campus) and showing up late, things went well. Tomorrow evening is an orientation thing, and hopefully I won't get lost. (I really don't have 45 minutes afterward to roam campus trying to figure out where my car is parked.)

I was very sad -- they moved the San Jose fireworks. They used to be in Guadalupe park, which was right across from me so I could sit on my front porch and watch them. But they sold off the rights to the SJ Giants and so it's now a 'post game celebration' down at the municipal stadium. Which was apparently *quite* late this year. It's not *that* much further, but more trees in the way and I'd have to stand in the street to get any real look.

I miss the river fireworks... biking down around noon... trying to keep out of the way of drunken college kids and others who might find it amusing to throw a youngish child into said river... looking for fireworks that had been dropped or duds that other kids who had money to buy them would drop... and of course attempting the virtually impossible act of skipping a stone completely across the river... watching older kids shoot fireworks at the boats on the river was amusing as well... good times.

Yeah, it wasn't all bad. (:
However, I have to say that I was never worried about getting thrown into the river. Maybe you were just way more annoying than I was. (:

Stanford campus isn't THAT confusing...but I suppose I've been working here for ever so I'm a bit biased in that regard ;-)

I will allow that an intimate familiarity with the location of everything makes it easier to avoid getting lost. (:
