Auto restarts, IME, usually mean that the processor is overheating. Try taking the side off the computer and/or pointing a fan at it.

I would think so, but last time it happened the desktop, the laptop and the work machine had all done it overnight.

That would be an automatic update, then.

Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates. I like mine set on "Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them" but your mileage may vary.

Ah, different circumstances than I was thinking of. Yeah, automatic updates. You can turn those off, you know. Or make it so it has to ask for permission before downloading and installing.
