cyrano: (Weasel Love)
[personal profile] cyrano
(500) Days of Summer. There are spoilers so I'm hiding this under the cut, except to say that Kirby, you should find and watch a trailer for Whip It--it's like the roller derby version of Bend It Like Beckham.

First off, Geoffrey Ahrend (MacKenzie) is obviously the new generation's Steve Buscemi. Mannerisms and voice. And now I can talk about the actual film. It's a quirky indie romance, and despite that I still think you should see it. The format (flipping back and forth from day to day, like Pulp Fiction with less cursing) is affected and arty, but I really liked it, especially when they used it to mirror two different events. In fact, that's pretty much the only good excuse for using it. Also, calling Zooey Deschanel "physically average in almost every respect" could only be true in the make believe world of Hollywood. I'm just sayin'.
I laughed a lot, and sometimes I was the only one. (At one point, Tom mentions that Summer likes Magritte, and in the scene where we (through Tom) first see her apartment, sitting on the table is a green apple on top of a bowler. I laugh out louded.) Plus, the soundtrack has Smiths, and there's a Joy Division and a Clash t-shirt, for the shameless 'connect with gen X' ploy.
One of the few disappointments for me is that, after spending the whole movie teaching Tom that he needs to not try and find a girl to make him complete, they hook him up. I know, I know, federal law requires that kind of thing in a romance film, but it still knocks it from five wags to four and a half. In a cinema, for full price, with Coke and popcorn.
