So to start on the bright side.
Today I saw a Sunnyvale PD sedan with an 'out of service' sign in the window. I'm very glad I wasn't driving because I would have plowed into somebody while I was laughing.
And despite the lack of a Daria, the animal-free dinner tonight went splendidly. (Soup a little thin, brussels sprouts a little understeamed, but the company was excellent and the food very tasty. Cream-of-Some-Vegetable soup, garlic bread, pickled cucumbers, gnocchi, aforementioned brussels sprouts, and an eggy mushroomy quichelike thing.)
Juliansinger arrived last night, and appears to be enjoying her brief stay.
For the lovely women who gave me money to spend at the mall, I found a gothy sweaterish wide weave thing, a faux suede shirt (that will likely serve me well as a jacket), a new pair of slacks and a package of fresh clean crisp undershirts. (No wifebeaters yet, though.)

On the downside. (This is not friends locked like my other posts regarding sudden work requirements. If they read this far then so be it.)
I got a call at about two-thirty this afternoon from the airline I applied with, saying they needed me to come in with paperwork on Tuesday morning at nine, and to expect to be there at least five or six hours. After a little pressing, they said it was likely that I would also need to be there on Thursday and Friday. After strong pressing, they admitted that I would quite possibly be working full time Monday to Friday at that point.
We want... information. (You won't get it!)
So I can give Debbie almost a week's notice. I'm glad she had been kept up to date on what I knew so far.
And I really feel dubious about the pattern of chaos and disorganization--the hurry up and wait sequences, the sudden and untimely requests for information or my presence. It stresses me out a lot at a time when I really don't want to be stressed.
Is this going to be an ongoing thing or is it just temporary until they get me hired and matriculated? Well, what the hell, the money's the thing. 150% of my current paycheck will probably allow me to survive down here.

*EDIT*
Oh yeah. I need to schedule another hair cut, it looks like.

the airline thing

I think the confusion and chaos with the airline employment thing will be temporary.
Remember, in the last nine months airports and airlines have received a "metric ass load" of new hiring regulations from On High. It is likely they are just as confused as you are, but they are in charge so they don't get the luxury of being just annoyed. They get to be annoyed and figure out how to make it all come out in the wash. Insert your own laundry joke punch line here, I'm going to bed.
