Contrariwise, it isn't so it can't be.
Mar. 31st, 2010 01:13 pmTwo nits to clear, and then I can discuss the actual movie.
A Jabberwock is a fearsome beast found in a poem. A poem named Jabberwocky. If Johnny Depp can recite the poem and point that out, you can get it right in the rest of the script.
The Red Queen is not the Queen of Hearts.
I enjoyed myself, although it is another data point in the 'I really don't care if a movie is in 3D or iMax' chart. (The only outlier has been Coraline.)
Alice originally was essentially a camera, moved from set to set to record Carrol's social satire. She had very little in the way of agency. I'm very pleased that this film moved away from that model and, in fact, centered the film on her agency, her power of choice. Bluntly and perhaps hamhandedly, but hey, Tim Burton has never been called subtle.
Mia Wasikowska just continues to get better, which thrills me, despite getting like fourth or fifth billing as the title character. I'm looking forward to Jane Eyre.
The ending was a stretch on my suspension of disbelief, but it mostly survived. Plus, they didn't hook her up with Johnny Depp or some other handy boy to make her complete.
