For example, two Black Panther types (or people pretending to be them, don't recall if anything factual was ever brought out) turned up at a polling place in... Pennsylvania, I think? on Election Day 2008, and Fox and the right wing blogs were screaming in hysteria.

Word. There are ten thousand ways to say this; for me, part of getting it was the moment right at the end of a certain otherwise-forgettable movie... which maybe you haven't seen an I shouldn't spoil. But to imagine if the faces were a different color, and how differently society would react -- that's an exercise we need to keep making people do. It's something we're not past, not even in large part.

The people who really need to read that article won't. But maybe someone will read it, and get something they didn't get before. (Obviously not the first commenter above, though.)

(I think it's "privilege", btw. Not grammar-flaming, or anything; just in case you wanted to correct it...)
