I know I've had my share of dissatisfaction with the new Doctor/producer/TARDIS (inside and out)/title sequence/Daleks/everything this season, but

I commented more than once in the first episode on how much this felt like Classic Who, right down to bringing back the Silurians. And, more or less, this was pretty straight up classic Who. I like Rory, and I was really worried I wasn't. He's showing up well as the male representative of the companion species. And then, at the end, they cranked things up and made it a sort of Classic Plus. I don't think anybody in the first twenty-six would have said "You know, the lizard people were here first--could they *try* sharing?" Unfortunately the Silurian president guy's decision that 'the Earth isn't ready' was a bit pat, but it's television. And there was the standard Moffat "evocative thingies are evocative" by giving us the mandatory misty dark graveyard hunt with the mysterious spooky predator, and the standard Moffat 'WTF' moments, like 'sonic doesn't work on wood'. Well of course it doesn't because trees don't have ears. WTF? But I could have kissed Nasreen when she looked around and asked the exact same question I had about there being plants with chlorophyll growing in total darkness 21+ kilometres under the surface.

The moment when Amy goes under, and when Rory is being entwined by time eating crack tendrils, were both actually emotionally impacting, and I approve. And the Doctor retreating from his 'screw you aliens you all die' stance in Vampires of Venice also made me feel good.

And yeah, the big reveal at the end of the episode? Squeakworthy.

The Van Gogh episode is on the DVR waiting for me. I think I'm about two thirds through.
And that's one of the great things about that website I posted about--I not only can watch Pertwee any time I like, but I also get to see the McCoy episodes finally!
