I've long considered making some recordings of me reading, and having recently made a crappy quality birthday present with Audacity, I'm considering closer to action now.

I've priced a studio at about $35/hour, and am looking to collect some short works to practise on. There's some Milne, and I've tried to find some Wodehouse that's short enough, but haven't come across anything yet. I'll probably check my collections of Gaiman, Shanks, maybe King.
Feel free to make suggestions.

EDIT: I should probably also look at possibilities for background music. And also maybe listen to a few audio books to find out where they use it.

Are you sticking solely to published authors?

Certainly you know people who write. :) Ask them!

Re: music and audiobooks - check out Podiobooks.com
Some of them use music during, but mostly it's for the intro and exits.

Audacity is likely not the problem, your microphone is. I listen to several home-produced podcasts that have great sound quality (including a bloke reading public-domain literature), but none of the broadcasters uses the crappy microphones you get with your computer or at RadioShack.

I'd have to research, but I think you can get a decent microphone for your computer that would pay for itself in 4-5 hours of recording time.

Something to think about if this is going to be a regular hobby.

Ambient noise is definitely one of my problems, which could likely be managed with a better microphone.

if you're not limiting yourself to published authors, there's a lot of podcasts of fanfic (I've mostly seen Torchwood, but I think Sherlock is inspiring a bunch of this as well.)

Also, if you'd consider poems, I vote for Billy Collins, because I think his stuff sounds GREAT read out loud...

Sounds interesting. Good luck with the project!
