Double Scoop Review
Oct. 6th, 2010 11:45 pmHenry IV part the first, which is really Henry V the prequel.
Despite not having read this one, I knew enough about the story to get by. I've never been a fan of Hal's "Oh I'm just pretending to drink and party and have a good time, and then I'll surprise everybody by transforming into SUPERKING" plan. It doesn't make him a heroic figure to me, it makes him a jerk. But then, it's one of the histories and there are plenty of jerks to go around.
I found the transitions between the scenes about politics and rebellion and the scenes about Jack Falstaff (in case you missed it, he's fat) to be jarring and problematic, but I've seen similar storytelling formats work very well with the switch from the national to the personal.
But I did really like the scenes between Lord and Lady Percy. They had good chemistry, they worked well together.
