Was Monday a national holiday that I was unaware of?

If you are getting FedEx home delivery, I think it's Sunday/Monday they don't work. (They deliver Tues-Sat.)

Amazon says this is USPS.

Despite the "Fedex" descriptor? Methinks Amazon might be a touch confused.

FedEx Smartpost is FedEx home delivery actually delivered by the USPS.
When you need to ship low-weight packages to residential customers, consider efficient, economical FedEx SmartPost service. By utilizing the United States Postal ServiceĀ® (USPS) for final delivery, FedEx SmartPost reaches every U.S. address, including P.O. boxes and military APO and FPO destinations. You can even use FedEx SmartPost to ship to Alaska, Hawaii and all U.S. territories.

UPS Basic is the same thing, by the way. Which I am supposed to be implementing for our site today, when I am not slacking off. :)

The upside is that it's a lot cheaper! (Which we'll pass on to customers.)

Hmmm... In that case, they're just lazy, and I vote you shake your fist at them a few times. ;)

I'm waiting for a book from Amazon that I hope will arrive before we leave on vacation this Thursday.

So you have my empathy and I share your frustration.

I recommend back up books. (:
I ended up buying books at the airport.

I have "back-up" books, but happily the book I was waiting for arrived yesterday!

It's a good suggestion, though.

I often buy a copy of The Economist at the airport because a flight and vacation are the only times I can get through the magazine.

Also, you should know that there's a package from Amazon downstairs for you.

Or maybe I should phrase that as:

I like how you phrased that.
