This is the best Lisa Loeb horror movie I've seen yet.
Yeah, it's your standard 'locked in a haunted asylum' movie, but I call it 'well done'. There's no loving focus on 'see how gory the death scene is?' and there's a constant leaning on the psychological rather than special effectual for the creepy.
Yeah, it's kind of a remake, and Geoffrey Rush's character is named Price, after Vincent, but it's really a terribly different film. However, I still grinned when familiar elements appeared.
I also loved the constant uncertainty--is it a stage trick? Is it husband and wife gunning for each other? Is it one of the mysterious guests with a mysterious agendum? The pervasive evil or contagious insanity of the house? Although I wish we hadn't seen the computer magically delete the guest list and write it out again, in the interest of again preserving that delicious uncertainty.
And without a cast who could convincingly play that uncertainty, the whole thing goes on an express train to Toiletsville. So kudos to them as well.
All in all, an enjoyable horror film for a fellow who does not, on the whole, enjoy horror films. Coyote gives it three solid wags.
Oh! I nearly forgot. Remember there's those actors I hate and they all have the *one* film that I like them in? Chris Kattan plays the house's owner and he can actually *act*.
