First Observation of the New Year

Every NYE I see a smattering of posts saying, essentially, oh thank god this year is over I hated it fuck you old year the new year had better be an improvement.
This is inevitable.
I have never compared to see how many of these posts are by the same people each year.
I cross my fingers and hope that very few of them are.
And then I step forward into the new year.

That's not where I'm going. Every year, some people are going to have a rough time of it. And a smaller subset of those people will have a year where the bad outweighs the good. And it's certainly possible, especially in harsh economic times, that some people have had the worst year of their lives ever.

I'm just hoping that I don't have a set of friends where every single year is the worst year of their lives, each year becoming worse and worse in an unending cavalcade of shit.

Because that would make me sad.

I don't think I'm usually in the "this year blows" crowd... but 2011 was really hard. I hope it was just blazing a trail for 2012's blessings.

With the exception of a two week stretch during the spring, 2011 was a vast improvement over 2010 for me. I am hopeful that 2012 will continue this positive trend in my life, and that it will be much kinder to those friends and family who had a sucktastic 2011.

This year has had its ups and downs but it was by far not the worst year for me. That was approximately four years ago and I hope to never ever have a year like that again. I do think this coming year is more promising because it's starting out ahead of where I was last year. :-)
