One benefit of telling iTunes "Just grab stuff randomly out of the library* and stuff it in the iPod" is that you come across things you might have heard once before--or, honestly, perhaps you heard the first ten seconds of, or (if you're not obsessive like me) just ripped it straight off the disk and chucked it into the drive--with a new ear. And you discover something you'd never known before.
And then, of course, the next cut is a beloved and well polished chestnut.
