Note to erstwhile kitchen witches:
When making a stew involving jalapenos and onions, after the prep work make certain to wash your hands, dip your hands in an autoclave, microwave your hands, and then scour your hands with steel wool.
And after that, still don't touch your eyes or scratch any bug bites.

ooooooo! Poor puppy!

It's a oil, so wiping them with rubbing alcohol helps get it off. (Gack. Your HANDS, not your eyes.) Heh. Although dipping your hands in tequila would not be out of line when working with jalapenos...

A cousin of mine once forgot to wash her hands after working with peppers...before she changed her tampon... with expected results.

Ow! Or alternately, wear some nice disposable latex gloves to do the dirty work.

That was going to be my suggestion. I learned this the hard way after making achiote paste.

We have a box of them for EXACTLY this reason. Also for working with raw meats.

Owww! I'm so sorry!

I had a scary experience once... Pre-kid. I was making salsa, hubby turned on cinamax softcore porn. I took a break, one thing led to another, ow oww oww oww!

Oh, honey.

Milk, if you don't have rubbing alcohol or tequila...

*hug* Poor sweetie.

When playing with the Rude Jalapenos, I put my hands in a plastic bag and work from there. No juice from the 'penos has been permitted contact with my skin since a bad going-to-the-loo experience.

'Nuff said. I'd have taken burning eyes, myself, having experienced both.

Yeah, I had a similar experience with Ben-Gay. All in all, I'd vote that 'eyes' was the worst of the two though, after charging around the house bellowing like a bull moose, head down, blind and slamming my head against doorjambs.

Ah. I've done the BG, as well...and still vote 'nads', due to the in-laws being present when I erred. I was disinclined to charge around screaming that my scrotum was suffering the fires of hell.

Oh, well, sure, in-laws. My family just laughed, and at least I could see; then I could read a book or watch television or something to distract myself.

I made the tragic error of trying to wash of the Ben Gay. With cold water.

All in all, really? Not so much. A couple of bumps, but it looks pretty placid. And I even got to chat with two of my girlfriends briefly on IM.

So, what kind of stew?

Experimental stew--I was at the market and saw that they had cheap asparagus and I thought 'yum!' And I decided that I didn't want to just steam it, and I had pork ribs in the freezer at home.
So I bought mushrooms, a sweet potato... was that it? And the house mate said 'I have these jalapenos I'm not going to use--do you want them?' and then I stole an onion from the root cellar. I feel like I'm forgetting something here. Um. Oh! Slivered carrots, yeah, I bought some of those.
Anyway, it's a sort of a whatchagot stew except it involved much of it being bought at the store first. I probably should have braised the ribs a little longer first; it's a little greasy. But other than that, I think it went well.
