Aaaand I finally surrender and do the random jukebox 'Name That Tune' meme...
Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!

Note: List Modified to remove instrumental tracks, tracks that are just short dialogue snippets and repeated appearances of artists.

EDIT: Crap. I forgot that when I put 'song title' in carats LJ would read that as a crude HTML tag and remove it. Fixed now!

Too lazy to go through them all quite yet, but I'll start from the beginning.

1-Mystery Dance, Elvis Costello

Do I get bonus points for this? :)

Just hearing #20 raised my morale.
(I suspect you may be able to tag at least one or two others--I just realized that I broke the rule about multiple artists without noticing.)

Hrmmm. If anybody is going to get 18 I expect it to be you.
I also think you've at least heard 3 7 8 13 and 26. 11 I know you should get. I'm not sure about 19, it's from our radio days though.

That's all right. There is some very obscure stuff on there. I certainly wouldn't be able to get most of them if someone else had posted them. That's the wonderful thing about randomization, I guess. :-)

Nah, no hard feelings. The product remains quality, it's just the morons who they brought on to try and make it a millionaire factory that I resent.
From: [identity profile] l2g.livejournal.com
Crap, crap, crap... whatever became of my copy of The Last Temptation of Reid?

Oh well. I'm going to put my money on "Sylvestre Matuschka". I can't remember any more of the lyrics than what you put down, but I'm dead sure it's that one.

(I swear I did not do a lyrics search. I had a strong hunch about the album and looked up the track listing. If you have to disqualify my entry... I shall accept your judgement gracefully.)

(Say, is that how "judgement" is spelled?)

(Yes, I know my subject line is from a different song.)
From: [identity profile] l2g.livejournal.com
Wait. More of the lyrics are coming back to me now.

And I kinda wish they hadn't. :-)

This one:
You had plenty money nineteen forty-one
You lost it all and then away you run
Why Don't You Do Right?--Sinead O'Connor (Roisnoir first)

I know as
You had plenty money back in '42
You let other women make a fool of you
Why don't you do right
like some other men do?

as sung by the beautiful Kathleen of Dead Ringer.

The only song I know that hasn't already been guessed is # 28 but I don't know who does it. I am teh lamerz.

You may recall my sparkling performance on your own music lyric guessing quiz. And to top it all off, I wasn't allowed to edit for 'Good Lord this one is obscure and even *I* don't know it unless I write it down.' (: (viz: 10, 12, 13, 15 and 16)
And yeah, 'Do Right' is a traditional, which means that people will tinker with it and often times also means there's no 'right' version.

And it strikes me how very poorly I can identify either my choices or other people's lists without the accompanying musical cues. I stare at the words to songs I love, and they mean nothing to me because I fail to tie them to the bassline, the melody....

I'd have got 6, 21, and 22, and 30, as well, and 14, except I would have said "Jessica Rabbit."
