Why is it that whenever I find someone who enriches my life, the previous people in my life get needy, clingy, and jealous?
Corollary: Why is it that I seem to have bad breakup karma that results in such fun things as being broken up with in a bar; on my answering machine, on Christmas Eve; and potentially over AIM?
Compersion is hard. When you find a resource that you value becoming scarce, it's natural to become more possessive of it. That doesn't mean it's a good thing, just not an entirely unexpected thing.
Corollary: Perhaps you, also, are Coyote's child. He values a good laugh, and sometimes you're convenient.
Why is it that, in the first year and a quarter of my novel-writing, I wrote 14,000 words, in the last two weeks of the writing I wrote 16,000, and in the last two days I have written 6,300 words?
What has changed, that I am picking up speed and consistancy so easily?
Perhaps now you're allowing yourself to make words? There does seem, in the past, to have been some blockage which has been dramatically reduced. Alternately, perhaps you're learning how. Alter-alternately, perhaps you received a visit from the Blue Fairy who is granting your request to become a Real Boy.
I saw Fight Club once, and I'd heard it was good and I would benefit from paying attention, so I was stone cold. What's the difference in the viewing experience?
You obviously saved up questions while you were on vacation.... Things broke because you were not there to watch them and, like teenagers in an '80s movie, they got all crazy in the subsequent lack of supervision. They fixed themselves, again, through the power of '80s movies, because they have come of age and learned a valuable lesson. And you being blamed for not doing something while you were supposed to be not doing something is a classic '80s comedy punchline. So blame John Hughes or Steve Holland.
The check mark actually started out as a Czech mark--its americanization was, in a way, inevitable. It was brought to the new world by the wave of Central European immigrants who came to Ellis Island around the turn of the twentieth century. The mark was used to identify their communities, to make them easier for newcomers (who might not be skilled in the English language) to locate.
That would be the Peter Principle. One does a job well, one is promoted to a new job. Therefore, once one is in a position that one does not perform well at, one stays there.
OK so I missed my chance to ask you a question on Friday, but if I'm still allowed, here's a Saturday question. I know it's late notice and all, but are you interested in coming over to my place and calling some Democrats to remind them to vote?
If you are interested, I'll be providing space, phone numbers, and instructions, from 2-6 today and tomorrow (Sat and Sun). I don't expect a lot of people due to the last-minute nature of it, but if you'd like to drop by anytime in that range you're certainly welcome.
Ummmm. Possibly tomorrow. Today I'm at work. I'm not good at last minute things any more, with my schedule. Where does the phone list come from, just to soothe my anxieties?
I believe it's from a list of registered democrats. Today's list happened to be for Sherrod Brown in Ohio. There are no names, just phone numbers.
I haven't got any RSVP's yet for tomorrow, so I might be here on my own again. Cold-calling people is a bit harder than I thought, so I won't be surprised if people have better things to do with their Sunday, especially given the late notice. On the other hand, if you want to drop by and say hello, and don't want to make phone calls, that's completely OK too.
Hate to say, but I think I'm going to cancel the calling party. I've gotten zero response, other than one maybe (yours).
If you do get the urge to call some voters, check out moveon.org for some instructions for calling on your own. You can spend as little as 15 min and still make a difference.

Why did they un-break when I returned, with no real intervention on my part? (Murphy's answer: It always works in front of the repair man.)
