I'd recommend something by Nicola Griffith, but that's mostly because I read her first two books years ago and just picked up her latest two and so I have her on the brain. Also, Harlan Ellison, Alison Weir, P.G. Wodehouse, Jane Austen, Jim Butcher, Joan and Vernor Vinge, and of course those authors with whom I am personal friends: Jess Hartley, C.E. Murphy/Cate Dermody, Fred Hicks, Sierra Black/Sara Dennis and Lilith Saintcrow. (If I forgot anybody they will kick me in the shins.)
