To reign is worth ambition though in Hell: Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav'n. But wherefore let we then our faithful friends, Th' associates and copartners of our loss Lye thus astonisht on th' oblivious Pool, And call them not to share with us their part In this unhappy Mansion, or once more With rallied Arms to try what may be yet Regain'd in Heav'n, or what more lost in Hell?
Leader of those Armies bright, which but th' Omnipotent none could have foiled, if once they hear that voice, thir liveliest pledge of hope in fears and dangers, heard so oft in worst extremes, and on the perilous edge of battle when it rag'd, in all assaults thir surest signal, they will soon resume new courage and revive, though now they lie groveling and prostrate on yon Lake of Fire, as we erewhile, astounded and amaz'd; no wonder, fall'n such a pernicious highth.
Enh. I was disappointed that I had to read each of those three times before I understood them. (I should have just cut and pasted rather than going for comprehension.)
If it's any consolation, that was Milton's intention - IIRC from my reading, he intended for people to have to work to figure out his meaning rather than being able to glean it from a single glance at the page.
Of course, Paradise Lost also contained all sorts of heretical anti-Catholic themes, too, which might've had something to do with it. ;)
Here's the article, which talks about how the His Dark Materials book series is a great way to take a lot of the ideas and make them more presentable (and how, unfortunately, the movie essentially gutted anything of religious substance from the story). It's a pretty cool essay.
Yes, yes. The eye-batting video is going to have to wait until I find a program that can take video with my iSight. Rest assured my debt is not forgotten. :)
Heavens no. Response on this meme is low enough already, what with the hiatus. There was a question, and rain, and it seemed irresistible. Kind of like, last week you didn't actually need dirty laundry to ask a question.
