If it's any consolation, that was Milton's intention - IIRC from my reading, he intended for people to have to work to figure out his meaning rather than being able to glean it from a single glance at the page.
Of course, Paradise Lost also contained all sorts of heretical anti-Catholic themes, too, which might've had something to do with it. ;)
Here's the article, which talks about how the His Dark Materials book series is a great way to take a lot of the ideas and make them more presentable (and how, unfortunately, the movie essentially gutted anything of religious substance from the story). It's a pretty cool essay.
