Because the prof has the power, and doesn't want it to be hir fault. Alternately, it's because the prof lost your paper because you rammed hir car one night after class, sending it sliding off the road into an unmanned pump at a petrol station. While the prof was able to escape the wreckage essentially unharmed, the paper was in the back seat of the spunky little VW Scirocco when it caught flame and was incinerated. Actually, I like the second one much better. Forget the first one.
