cyrano: (Smarter than you)

I received email today notifying me about a class action lawsuit against Classmates.Com for sending email against terms of contract. The settlement, apparently, provides that the victims receive $2 off a 'Gold' level membership at Classmates.Com.

And I'm thinking to myself, that would be a clever marketing campaign. "Oh, you sure stuck it to the man this time, class action lawsuit that you knew nothing about! Now come and reap the just rewards by giving us money! ($2 off!)"

Netflix did a similar settlement for their class action suit a couple of years back. I don't know how they track people down for this stuff, but last year I got $12 from a settlement of a suit about computer memory price fixing in the late 90s.

It's just a confusing direction for me; "We have found you an untrustworthy business partner in the past. Please give us a discount on a future transaction with you."

It's kind of like suspending a kid from school because she was cutting classes. "Uh. Thanks, I guess?"

As you probably know, when audio CDs came out, there was collusion between the record companies and the retailers to keep the price artificially high. $15-$30 for a disk that costs less than .25 to make, (maybe $1.00 when you count shipping and packaging.)

So there was a huge class action lawsuit about 15 years later.

I've bought hundreds of audio CDs from the time they came out. I got $5.00
