Constructing a Live365 eighties playlist may be difficult. I cannot use 125% Smiths.

Well, no, not 125%. But 100% is okay. Just call it All Smiths, All the Time, and be done with it. :)

Alas, BMI/ASCAP also forbids that.
There's rules about playing the same artist, songs off the same album... bleah. Paperwork! I'm itchin' for a pirate internet radio!

Just tap dance on the line then. As much Smiths as possible, interspersed with covers, tribute bands, weird arrangements, wanna be Smiths, other bands using the name Smith, parodies, commentary.

C'mon Great Coyote! You gotta get creative. Or to paraphrase Stravinsky: More constraints lead to better art.

You've seen my mix disc "Keeping Up With the Smiths" right? (:
And Stravinsky would know. I'm not interested in that level of constraint though.

Ah! Good thing no one told me of such things when I had my pirate radio station and would frequently wander off while leaving an album on. :)

(It had a broadcast range of about to the end of the street I grew up on... which was a cul-de-sac. My listeners were the random neighborhood children, with an average age around 6-7. :) )

(A) That was probably legal. FCC begrudgingly allowed such small range broadcasts. We considered getting an antenna that would broadcast to the edge of the range of non-licensed broadcasts, and then getting a series of repeaters set up at perimeter. Technically legal but if they'd found it they probably would have confisticated it.

(B) Woo! Pirate Radio girl! You're even more awesome than I thought!

I think it's only awesome in that I had the station. I played a LOT of crap music (again, note the average listener age), but then would put on my one and only Oingo Boingo tape when I got bored. :) My dad set it up for all of us to goof around with, but I was the one who did it primarily, and I even brought in guest DJs (because I was in HS and had friends who could drive to my house :) ).

I think that having the station, and using it (and having guest DJs) are plenty cool enough for high school. (: Which tape was it?

There's also Duran Duran. And Gary Newman.

And a whole lot of other mediocre artists from the 80s.

The Cure. Elvis Costello. Thomas Dolby. X. Depeche Mode. OMD. Kraftwerk. Mexican Radio. The Clash. Talking Heads. R.E.M.. The The. Jesus and Mary Chain. Public Enemy. Violent Femmes. Pixies. Joy Division. Pogues. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
I'll probably do okay. (: I was just in a very Smiths mood last night.
